Learn More About Treatment
› What is glaucoma? Glaucoma is diagnosed when there is damage to the optic nerve which can over time cause irreversible vision loss. Luckily, there are many treatments for glaucoma including eye drops and surgeries to prevent loss of vision. Because vision loss from glaucoma is permanent, it is important to diagnose and start treatment as early as possible. At Caledonia Vision, all comprehensive exams include evaluation for glaucoma including a ganglion cell scan which aids in early detection.
› How is glaucoma treated? Glaucoma is most often treated using eye drops, but can also be treated with laser or other surgical techniques. The goal of any of these treatments is to lower the pressure inside the eye, which allows the nerve to receive adequate oxygen from blood flow. Your eye doctor will consult with you about your health history including any history of sleep apnea, high or low blood pressure, asthma, cholesterol levels, diabetes and cataracts to determine which treatment is the best for you. Vision loss caused by glaucoma can not be restored so it’s important to have regular eye exams to detect glaucoma at its earliest stage. If glaucoma is recognized early, vision loss can be slowed and/or prevented.
