Orthokeratology, How Does it Work?
Ortho K corrects mild to moderate cases of myopia and some astigmatism. We’ll evaluate your eye health, current glasses prescription, and the curvature of your cornea to determine if you are a good candidate to be fit with Ortho K lenses.
Ortho K Fitting Steps
1. Complete eye health examination.
2. Detailed digital images are obtained of the cornea, and lenses are designed.
3. Contacts are placed on the eye in the office and the fit is evaluated by the doctor.
4. Patient takes lenses home and wears them while sleeping.
5. The next morning lenses are removed and vision is evaluated. Improvement is noticed after only one night!
Adjustments are sometimes needed to achieve perfect vision, and the process of gently reshaping the cornea to 20/20 vision can take up to two weeks. During that time, patients are provided with soft daytime contacts or temporary glasses.
Is This Treatment Safe?
Yes. Wearing contact lenses always has some level of risk, but by following the wearing schedule outlined by your eye doctor at Caledonia Vision as well as following proper lens care techniques. Ortho K is as safe or safer than traditional soft contact lenses.
How Long Does it Take to Start Working?
Patients see a noticeable improvement the first day, with many patients able to see 20/20 without glasses after just one night of treatment. Complete vision correction takes about 7-14 days. During this time, soft disposable lenses are provided if your goal of 20/20 vision is not yet reached.
Does it Work Better Than Traditional Glasses or Contacts?
The visual result of Ortho K is equal to the vision correction achieved with traditional glasses or contacts. The added benefit of Ortho K is that it prevents the progression of nearsightedness. Whereas traditional glasses and contact lenses need to be made stronger each year. Wearing Ortho K lenses that stabilize a child’s nearsightedness prescription can improve their chances of being a candidate for permanent vision correction, such as LASIK, when they reach adulthood.
